Pro dance studio dancers

I got a very interesting assignment last monday. Pro dance studio needed promo shots, a kind of portfolio of their dancers to forward it to their clients. So the point was not to show their dancing poses, but it was more or less to “introduce” the girls to the clients. So I went for the portrait/fashion approach to the shoot (of course we did also mix up some dancing poses). I had to shoot 15 girls in 5 hours and that included group shots in various outfits as well. So you can imagine what kind of pace I had to keep. I had roughly 5-10 minutes per girl. After shooting with each girl, we viewed the photos on the laptop. If the series was good we moved on, if not I had to take a few more shots (I also took a few more shots if the series was good, but the make up of the girl that was supposed to be next, wasn’t finished yet). The shoot looked like this: show me what you got girls! Strike your poses! Because of the previously mentioned ultra limited time frame, there was no time for me to guide them through the poses and make all the necessary corrections (regarding poses, mimics etc). I did, of course, make a few suggestions and (tried to) make them show more energy and passion. Most of the girls were pretty relaxed and that was a big plus for me. Usually every girl (that’s not a professional model) needs at least a few minutes to warm up. As always some did better than others, but all in all regarding the circumstances, I was satisfied with the results and most importantly, the client was pleased.

Because of the limited amount of time that we had, I used just one light set up. I did want to try out 3-4 various set ups, but there was no time (I’d need at least an hour or so) and I’m glad Mimi helped me out with the lighting, so I didn’t have to waste too much time setting it up. We chose to go along with the more dramatic, hard light. And I’m glad the client went along with it, since I’m just so tired of studio shoots with boring flat lighting (up to date, that was all that I shot in a studio, unless it was a personal project). I also have to thank Mimi, for letting me use her 70-200 2.8. And make my arms almost fall off after 5 hours of constantly using it :P .

Let me just wrap this up in a few sentences. Shooting was a blast. Not only because it was fun to shoot with all those girls, but also because of the pace (you really have to be alert all the time) and the fact that everything was running pretty smoothly, everybody was in a good mood, usually these kind of circumstances would be really hard for the people (meaning the girls) that are not in this “business”.

I’ll post photos in the order they were shot. As always, I recommend viewing them LARGER.

One of the first photos that were taken (I don’t count prep shots as real shots of course). The lighting wasn’t really there yet, it doesn’t have a “meaningful shadow” behind her, nor does it vignette the way it should. But I like the shot as a whole and it was one of the chosen (by me and pro dance staff) ones for this girl (I still haven’t completed the selection).

As you can see, I did manage to get shadows “in order”.

A classic, but photos like this, bring money to the clients…A song, shake that money maker, comes to my mind. I wonder why, hmmm :D .

BW or color?

I like the photo above. Let me tell you why. The first series that we’ve made, didn’t really look good. To be honest, the photos were bad. However, I suggested we make another brief series of shots and she was a bit hesitant, since she was also pretty disappointed after viewing the shots on the laptop. It was a tricky situation. It’s not good to push models, especially if something beats them down. But then we did make another try (to be honest I was quite doubtful of the outcome, because of her mood and state of mind). I cheared her up, pushed her a bit to show me more emotions, energy. And I think this photo shines. It shows energy. A real contrast to the first, completely lifeless and dull series. I must say I’m proud of what we achieved in just a few minutes. Because it’s so hard to turn things around so quickly. If you’ve done a lot of model (portrait, fashion etc) photography, I’m sure you know what I mean and probably also how good it feels to turn things around completely.

Wildcat. I love it when girls get wild! Don’t you?

As you can see, every photo has (a slightly) different post production. The client will, of course, get them post processed in the same style, as it’s logical for a series of photos. But I’ve decided to post process every photo differently for this blog post, to make it a bit more interesting and to get a feedback on what works best for the photos in your opinion.

Canon Group buy

Here we go again, yet another six months have passed. I’ve pasted a complete Canon price list at the end of this post. Brand new entry level DSLR Canon 450D that just hit the stores, is of course available, as well as limited amount of 400D’s (so if you don’t have to have the newest&the latest and want to save a nice amount of Euros, hurry up).

Since I’m lazy I’m going to c/p the last part of the post from my slo-foto post (it’s in Slovene, but it doesn’t really matter since this group buy is organised for Slovenian customers only):

Nakup in prevzem je v Ljubljani, plačilo je gotovina ali predračun, izvor blaga je Slovenija, prav tako garancija pri nas ter seveda navodila v slovenščini. Preko kontaktnega obrazca mi pošljite naročila, ki naj poleg izbranih artiklov vsebujejo še vaše podatke (ime, priimek in GSM oz vse podatke potrebne za izdajo predračuna, če boste kupovali na “firmo”).

Getting ready for tomorrow’s wedding

And these were the longest preps for a wedding that I can recall. I tried to get my hands on a 1Ds mkIII and try it out on a real assignment. I was especially curious about how effective highlight priority really was ( I saw an amazing comparison a few weeks ago), but it wasn’t available. So I got me a 1Ds mkII instead. I also bought a new (flash) battery charger with a set of batteries. I had a hunch that the old one didn’t fill the batteries completely and I was right - I checked it at a local photo store and the batteries were only filled 40-60%. I also bought a memory card, Sandisk 4 GB extreme III and I got it for a really nice price - 33 EUR. And most importantly, I solved the back focus problem on my 30D that I found out about just yesterday. I had it serviced today and it focuses spot on with my Sigma 18-50 2.8 which I’ll use on 30D (I’ll use 85 on the 1 Ds mkII). I have to thank the guys from 3A service, they’ve done a great job in a matter of hours and saved me a lot of problems (I’d have to rent another crop body if they didn’t fix it). 30D works perfectly with my Sigma now.

It looks like everything is set on my part, I just hope the weather will “fix” itself. The forecast sure looks bad:

Cuba, day 1

My plane landed just a few hours ago, so I haven’t taken many photos yet. But I did come across one of the open air boxing clubs, which is of course a part of the famous Cuban school of boxing. After a few minutes of watching the boxers practise, I laid eyes on this thing of beauty that you can see in the photo below. Juanita! After the practise was over I invited her out for a drink. Stay tuned for part 2, Juanita beach session.

Please view LARGER (or else the photo will appear soft)

I wish my car got stolen in Serbia

Or better said, I wish I was in Serbia for new year’s vacations, where an attempt to steal my car was made. Why? Because Serbian police handles those situations really good. At least according the video embedded below. For all of you, that don’t know what this is about, please check this post Prague adventures - stolen car etc.

Bored

It’s spring time. Is it spring time? Who’d know with all this snowing that’s going down in the last few days. All I know is, that I’m still stuck with my photo projects. That I’m getting restless. I went through my archives again. And I found a photo that reflects my mood perfectly.

12:44

Today I went to take a few shots of the protest against Kosovo independence. The protests took place in front of Serbian orthodox church in Ljubljana. It started at 12:44, like anywhere across the world where people are protesting against Kosovo independence, to symbolise the UN resolution 1244. The resolution states that Kosovo is a part of Serbia.

What I wanted to capture at the protests were some interesting portraits and emotions. Not to make a coverage. After all, I’m not a PJ, so I can shoot the way I want. I was a bit disappointed, since there were only around 1000 people present, instead of anticipated 3000. So it was even harder to find the kind of people I wanted to shoot. Old men with their distinguishable caps (šajkače) and the protest itself was pretty peaceful and people didn’t get as emotional as I expected them to be. I mean, there of course was some chanting like: “kdor ne skače ta je šiptar, hej hej hej” and “ubi, zakolji, da šiptar ne postoji”. But there was no true anger or hatred, no tears, no violence. Ok, there were some threats to the PJs, that came to close. That was also the reason they kept to themselves, away from the “raging” crowd, while I was the only one that was in the middle of the chanting, jumping etc.

Here are some shots, comments are appreciated, since I rarely do documentary photography.

One can rarely see so many police officers at such small scale protests. The shot was taken 3 blocks away from the protest. American embassy was totally blocked with fences and police cordons.

Apple’s new brilliant invention

What do you think Apple fan(atics)? You’d be spending a lot more time on the toilet if Apple made something like this :D . And I bet you’d find it interesting if not inspiring, some would probably even request an upgrade featuring Mac OS X, which is not included in this set. You can check the full Apple style presentation on the (I believe it is) official Air Poo site. The source of the photos and text below is TechBlog.

With a MacBook Air/iPod dock, integrated surround sound speakers, heated seat, and multi-touch flusher, the Air Poo concept could be the ultimate toilet for Apple fans. Click here for first picture in gallery.

The multi-touch flushpad intuitively uses one finger swipe to send no. 1 down the pipes and two fingers for no. 2, which its built-in iPod dock and surround sound masks with “crystal clear highs and bowel-shaking lows.”
