Min DOF Photography

Yeah I know, there are cigarettes on the floor, that bra strap is sticking out, she has hair on her face…But it’s a trashy fashion/fetish shot…

I just came from today’s portrait/fashion session, that took place in an abandoned hotel Bellevue (I hope I spelled correctly). I already mentioned most of the details in the Anyone wanna be my assistant post, so I won’t write about it again. Anže was of great help, I couldn’t do 90% of the shots without his assistance, reflector was a must - and still I had to shoot at ISO 400-640 at f1.8!! And those numbers aren’t realistic anyway, because someone played with the display settings on 1Ds mkII and photos that seemed fine were all underexposed and those that seemed overexposed were fine. So the photos had to be “pushed” by 2/3-1 2/3 f stops. Yeah, shit really does happen. Luckily, I didn’t shoot commercially, so images will still be ok for web publishing. Thanks to 1Ds’s great sensor and processing.

Another thing was that Jess&I weren’t “operating” at peak efficiency. So I can’t say I’m really satisfied with the photos…At least make up, environment and my assistant were great.

I had a session with Špela over a year ago. I haven’t posted this photos on my blog, but I did post them on various photo gallery sites. What do you think about them? Did I suck over back then? It wasn’t easy to tell you the truth; we had the session because she needed a few photos of herself. I noticed, that she doesn’t like to be photographed. So I was straightforward and asked her about it. And she just said: no, I don’t. But she needed the photos…Taking photos of people like that is a pretty fucked up thing. Regarding the circumstances, I think the photos came out pretty good.

The 1. one is totally average. I’m just showing you, so you can see we didn’t shoot on the train only. We tried various locations, but those train shots came out best at the end.

That was the first and also the last time that I was shooting with a model, that hates being in her role (unprofessionally at least). And I really hope it’s going to stay that way. Because I really enjoy if the model is enjoying the session, that way and only that way you can make really great photos!

Ok, I guess the title should be Jess, Jessy or Jessica. I usually name my sessions by the model’s name. But this time I couldn’t help myself. Not when it comes to the photos of the session with probably the finest lips I’ve ever shot. Did I mention lips are my fetish? Ok, now you know even if you didn’t know it or noticed it from my session shots, where the models are always brunettes, with nice, full lips. Yeah, go ahead and check the session category located in the sidebar .

The photo below is the one that was a part of the concept, which didn’t come out nearly as good as I expected.

I’m posting a single photo from today’s session. A preview. It wasn’t easy though. I was totally fucked up from yesterday’s party, but it’s more challenging shooting with a hangover anyway . Life must suck sometimes, so we can appreciate all the nice things that happen to us from time to time…Wait, WTF am I writing?! Ok, ignore the text, enjoy the photo and tell me your thoughts about it.

I often find myself wondering which are my best photos. Usually when I’m thinking about submitting my photos to a photo contest (ok, I’ve actually done it only once), when I’m thinking about having an exhibition, when I’m submitting my photos to a portfolio or when I’m sending it to one of the magazines…

So I’d like to get your opinion about it. Because choosing out of top 11 is different than submitting a photo on a web gallery for a critique - you get opinions on a single photo, not on a bunch and comparisons aren’t possible as well.

At the end let me just write, that Špela really got into her role. She was great, she has the passion, energy, that’s definitely needed for this kind of sessions. And that’s what most models lack - passion!

I was just digging through my 1Ds mkII and 5D archive. To see, or perhaps better said, to convince myself that Full frame cameras just have that “must have” advantage for me (yeah I mean DOF and a few minor advantages). I think it’s not enough to pay more than 3x the price of Canon 30D+Tamron 17-50 2.8 for Canon 5D+135 f2L+Tamron 28-75 2.8. Ok, that was the first half of dilemma. The other is the photo below. It wasn’t good enough for first selection that I already posted on the blog - 1st session with Mina. But now it seems kinda interesting. Especially that look, expression on her face. You know, the kind of women expression, that we men can’t seem to resolve sometimes…

And there’s one more thing, that I just remember that I was thinking about during and after this session. There’s still way too much DOF (at f1.8 ofcourse), when shooting full figure or from waist up. So, to hell with FF and paying over 300% more:).

About this shot. I can’t make up my mind. One of those, that I can’t put my finger on: is it good or bad…
