What’s wrong with my blog?

Or why the hell do I get either a bunch of comments or close to zero, sometimes a post is left without comments? Does the quality of my posts variate that much, or is it that my readers have mood swings that are really wild :D ? Should I blame the weather :) ? I know I’ll get a bunch of comments if I post an interesting session post, with good/interesting photos. But I can’t do that everyday, so I try to post something interesting usually photographical for you to view or at least read. From time to time I also write a money making post, because I think it interests a lot of readers. As I can see, most of Slovenian bloggers have ads on their site and are interested in improving their income, by improving ad positioning, signing up to various ad networks etc.

Give me some feedback folks. I thought my last post (friends) was pretty interesting, but it got no comments. So it looks like it sucks. One explanation could be, that you’ve seen most of this post in my older posts…But I wanted to join all of those photos in one single post, so that they’re easily accessible etc.

Friends…

I was digging through my archive and decided to make, or better said, to dedicate a post to my friends. I gathered best snapshots that I took over the last couple of years and posted it here. Most of them are spontaneous snapshots during coffee time, some were a part of the photo equipment tests and there was one mini session too - with Fločo in his favourite role, acting retarded. Please view LARGER.

You can just feel Nikon colours, huh ;) . Taken with D200 and Nikkor 85 1.4

Fločo, the best hairdresser in town:

The photo below is taken with 1D mkII, all the rest (of him) with 1Ds mkII, Canon 85 1.8 was mounted on both cameras.

Does equipment really matter?

I believe that’s one of the most frequently asked questions among photographers. Some say it does, some that it doesn’t. And those who claim the later are usually more or less hypocritical. Why? Because they either want better equipment and can’t afford it or because they don’t be recognised for what they really are - showoffs. I won’t get in philosophical nor psychological hypothesis and get straight to my opinion on the matter. That’s what you read my blog, right? To read my opinions and thoughts (and ofcourse view my photos) mainly about photography.

Let me tell you an interesting story. I got a 1Ds mkII last june (2006) for the first time in my life. It was a real beast at that time, FF, 17 mpix, with competition not even half close. I really had no special plans with it, the main reason to borrow it, was to take it to the portrait workshop that we organised on slo-foto - click to go to the workshop thread. So I got it on friday, probably took some shots and than borrow it to a friend. Yeah on the first day. So you can see I wasn’t really excited to get the best DSLR in the world at that time. On the other hand he was totally overwhelmed, he drove 320 km to borrow it for half a day (from friday evening to saturday morning when I needed it for the workshop). A few days later a friend of his thanked me because “i gave him the opportunity” to hold it in his hands…It’s really crazy how much people differ.

So as you can see, I really don’t give a damn about the photo equipment. I still use my good ol’ 350D. To be honest, I was thinking about 5D, but I reconsidered, because the complete package (135L, 28-75 2.8, new camera bag and memory card) would cost me around 4k (with really nice rebates that I can get). Besides that, I can borrow 1Ds mkII when I need it. I then decided to get me a 30D. And the only reason is really, that its production stopped this summer, the prices are ridiculous and it still works with Rawshooter. If that wasn’t the case I’d still use my 350 D for half a year or so, because it really works fine for me (I’m just not sure about the shutter life).

And there’s one more reason, why I wouldn’t buy a flagship DSLR; its weight and bulkiness. I really don’t understand why the hell manufacturers always make bricks. That’s why I favor D200 over D2Xs (I use both on daily basis) and 5D over the 1Ds. Ok, the D2Xs noise levels at ISO 800 are ridiculous, but that’s a subject for another post…

To me, since I’m a portrait photographer, it’s much more important what I have in front of the lens, than what kind of equipment I’m holding in my hands…

And what do you think about that? Does equipment really matter?

Good old days

Man those were the days! Or better said, that was THE day. If things were going like this every day, I would have a nice, comfortable 4 hour workweek. But if you can’t generate that type of traffic and if people don’t click on the ads, than once reached reality becomes an illusion. But there’s another reason for this post. To shut up all the wise-asses, who think they know everything, when they really know shit. Here’s the link to a thread on slo-foto - the thread was really about yuwie, but it later involved adsense as well. If I owned a site similar to cnn.com, I’d be making millions off of advertising every year…

View LARGER if you want to see a 43$ daily adsense income ;)

Špela (archive)

I had a session with Špela over a year ago. I haven’t posted this photos on my blog, but I did post them on various photo gallery sites. What do you think about them? Did I suck over back then? It wasn’t easy to tell you the truth; we had the session because she needed a few photos of herself. I noticed, that she doesn’t like to be photographed. So I was straightforward and asked her about it. And she just said: no, I don’t. But she needed the photos…Taking photos of people like that is a pretty fucked up thing. Regarding the circumstances, I think the photos came out pretty good.

The 1. one is totally average. I’m just showing you, so you can see we didn’t shoot on the train only. We tried various locations, but those train shots came out best at the end.

This is the reason why I love Rawshooter - COLOURS!

That was the first and also the last time that I was shooting with a model, that hates being in her role (unprofessionally at least). And I really hope it’s going to stay that way. Because I really enjoy if the model is enjoying the session, that way and only that way you can make really great photos!

Answers to (all) Yuwie questions

You had quite a few questions about this social network I wrote about a couple of days ago. I did answer most of your questions to the best of my knowlege. But then again, my knowlege about it is far from perfect. So I’m writing this post to clear things up. To get to the virtual presentation of Yuwie, just click on the banner below. You might want to skip the first presentation (if you know the basics and hate the standard propaganda) by pressing on the next button. All the next presentations focus on explaining how money can be made. Presentations are good and give you a good picture about how this social network really works. The bottom line is you get a cut from the advertising.

I hope this post was helpful. Please share your thoughts about Yuwie. I see you are quite interested, 10 people have already signed up in the first 24h…

Craziest SLO music video

I’ve came across this video awhile ago. I didn’t post it, because I tried to have a true photo blog, with very few offtopic posts. But now I’ve realised that’s it’s virtually impossible to post every day and keep it almost 100% photographical. Some can manage it and they’re posting photos (usually one a day), but I’m not a photojournalist and not at all a guy who can take photos every day - I’d get sick and tired of it in a month or even sooner. Now that I’m really into blogging, I read a lot of slovenian and also foreign blogs on daily basis. And none of those who are posting every day, or even a few times a day, stick to a single subject (eg photography, make money online, nail polishing blogs etc). So you can expect a larger variety of my posts in the future. And I’d really like to get your feedback on the subject…

Anyway, here’s the video - SALMONELA.

Yuwie.com

Today’s post is dedicated to a social network, similar to Myspace. The concept is pretty much the same, you meet new people, new people meet you, you can get a nice model for a session or even a client that needs your photographical (or other) expertise and you earn money. But that’s is what you can do and those are the opportunities that might be in store for you. What is more important and really sets it apart from Myspace is, that you make money just by “using” it. If you refer people to Yuwie and they refer people to Yuwie and your pages generate a ton of traffic, you can make money. Yep, Yuwie is sharing it’s ad revenue with it’s members, at least to a certain extent.

Here’s the “earning scheme”:

LEVELS - REFERRALS - PAGEVIEWS - EARNINGS
1—————3—————3,000—————$0.15
2—————9—————9,000—————$0.45
3—————27————-27,000————–$0.54
4—————81————-81,000————–$1.62
5—————243———–243,000————-$4.86
6—————729———–729,000————-$14.58
7————–2,187——–2,187,000————-$43.74
8————–6,561——–6,561,000————-$328.05
9————-19,683——19,683,000————-$984.15
10————59,049——59,049,000————-$8,857.35

TOTAL——88,572 —–88,572,000————$10,235.49

The other nice thing about is, that it really works. Not like Myspace, that’s on and off, with all the errors driving you nuts. At least that’s the case with me, since I’m not a pacient man.

Out for a drink with THE lips

And I took a few shots (4 to be exact), since I had the camera with me…The photo is a high ISO crop and the thumb is upsized (instead of downsized) - so please don’t whine about the IQ ;) .

Women are from Venus…

Yeah, an offtopic post. Apparently I don’t have to post anything that’s even close to photography. All I could do, is whine that I had to return te fifty. No real testing. I was just fuckin’ around with you with all that 50 1.4 mini review and preview posts. Well, you could say I did. Unintentionally. I really had no idea I was going to get the call today to return it, because a customer was going to buy it…Now let’s finally get to the point of the post. It’s a funny stand up clip, regarding the differences between men and women. It’s hilarious, it’s true and he curses all the time too :D . Here it is .
