Venice through standard zoom

It’s really just an add-on of the previous post – as I already mentioned I didn’t take many shots with this lens. So I’m posting just a few Burano photos.

Cats were really cool, without a worry in the world just lying across the path. The owner had to literally drag it off the street (unfortunately too soon for me to make a good shot).

Venice through 85 1.8

Many of you may wonder why in the world would someone torture himself by taking shots of Venice almost exclusively with the good ol’ 85 1.8 which is a portrait lens. 85 mm in those crowded narrow streets. Hell yeah ;) . It was mounted on Canon 1 Ds mkIII.

I also had a second cam, Canon 30D, which I used with my Sigma 18-50 2.8 Macro. The original plan was to use the new Sigma 12-24, but something came up and I had to use 18-50 2.8. That was a real shame, because I’m sure 12-24+85 1.8 would be a perfect combo on a FF camera. I wouldn’t miss the 24-85 mm range, since I’d either shoot with a really wide angle to get crazy perspectives (as in geometric distortions) or in some cases to get everything in the frame in those narrow streets of Venice or I’d use the 85 1.8 for details as well as for general architecture shots.

I’m really sorry thumbnails can’t be enlarged. Almost every time WP gets updated, something doesn’t work anymore. I hate it and I’ll try to fix it. So try to enjoy this small sized images (some of you may have already seen it on facebook). EDIT: My mean man Luc fixed it. Thanx Luc, you’re the shit!

Burano!!!! My (by far) favourite part of Venice. All those colours, less tourists…It’s really gorgeus.

A typical Burano alley. So colorful.

Even cats are cooler on Burano. So relaxed, mediterranean slow paced :D

054j5001

Colors, colors!!!

Some manage to ruin the overall awesome impression of Burano, with kitchy add-ons like this

Did I add too much contrast?

054j5044

Well what do you say about this one ? :D

Colors again

And for the last finally a gondola. I just couldn’t catch one from the front (under the right light conditions), there were really few tourists in Venice that day (thankfully),  so I guess that reflected on the number of gondola’s.

I’m going to publish the 18-50 2.8 shots in a separate post. That’s it for now, see you in a week or so ;) .

Stendap

Well this was fun! Valič hired me to make a coverage of the show. Photographically I couldn’t do wonders since I couldn’t move around like on concerts and some other events, where you can move around the stage and try various angles etc. My position was static, I took all the shots from the same seat. But on the other hand it was much more comfortable and I could really relax, seat back and enjoy the show. Me and Vid (Valič) go way back, but he still cracks me up, I almost laughed my ass off a few times. I really recommend their show for everyone who likes (stand up) comedy and especially to those that aren’t familiar with it. There were also other comedians, but I’m going to post just Vid’s photos, since his gesturing and mimics were by far the best, as was his performance overall (though I liked the others as well, especially Ivan Šarič).

EDIT: I wondered why noone commented. I bunch-posted the photos with the new WP feature called gallery. And every photo had a comment section of its own…I’ve reposted the photos the old fashioned way, but now you cant enlarge them. Well it’ll have to do until I figure it out.

Problems with CS3 profile (Mac)

I mentioned inconsistency between CS3 and other profiles in the last post. In the comment section there’s also a dialog between me and Matjaž regarding the matter. To keep it short: There should be no differences in color, saturation, contrast etc when viewed in CS3 or in a web browser. Below you can see the difference. There is a noticeable difference between CS3 and firefox/safari pic (left CS3, right firefox) contrast level and especially colors.

Any help, solution of the problem would be appreciated!

Dilyara

Ok, time for a change. Not in my style of photography.  Just when it comes to my model. Yes, she looks similar to the other models I’ve had sessions with. Some may say she’s just another in the line of gorgeous brunettes. She is, but what sets her apart from the rest is that she’s Russian. So if I can’t work abroad, I can at least work with foreign models, right? ;)

So we went in Tivoli to make a “fall styled” session. There were 3 parts of the session. The warm up part in the shade, with soft lighting. This part is always necessary with debuting models. Then we moved to the sunny part of the park, to make some “gegenlicht” shots. It was a bit tricky, because of the big 120 cm reflector that I used. It just isn’t nearly firm enough to hold it with one arm (and shoot with the other). The photo below is from the third part. It’s the only part I was able to make a few good shots. In the first two we had a lot of hair problems. Because every time she tilted her had in any way but backwards her hair partly covered her eyes. And that really interfered with the workflow; you make one shot (sometimes we managed to make a few), tell her to make a slight adjustment to her posture or head position and BANG, hair over her eye(s). With interruptions like that, it’s impossible to make a good photo. As most of you know, the interaction between the model and photographer must be good, relaxed. And you gradually make better and better photos with each tiny alteration, change of mimic, posture etc. So we did manage to skip all but the backward head tilts and made this shot.

EDIT: The photo looks a bit more contrast and desaturated when viewed in internet browsers. I guess my adobe profile isn’t calibrated…I’ll resolve that before my next post (that gives me a lot of time to :D ) .

It was a great experience. I faced an obstacle like that for the first time (and I’ve shot a lot of models). I guess it’s a first time for everything. I’m glad we overcame it. I think one gains experience with overcoming problems and/or challenges.

If you need a model…

Let me know. In the last 10 days I got 3 clients that needed models. And they were all very satisfied with them. You know that my models are the shit, right? ;)

If it keeps on going like that I’ll be earning more from model commissions than from photography during the winter :D .

Oh I almost forgot; you can find ‘em in the sessions category.

P.S. A new session post will follow soon. I intended to shot a session this weekend, but I caught a bad case of cold. And the model is going to be interesting too, exotic. So ya’ll best stay tuned!
